My wife and I are new to the Fredericksburg area and find it challenging to find places to walk. Where are the sidewalks? We heard about the DRHT from a collegue, applied for a permit, and got a very quick response. We walked pieces of the trail and liked the walks so much that are committed to walk the entire lentgth. What a great trail to enjoy a quiet, peaceful walk. Thank you for giving us the privildge of walking on such a great trail.

Just wanted to let you know that our group from New Comers and Old Friends walked the trail beginning on Rt 610 today. There were 9 of us and everyone enjoyed the walk. A few asked for copies of the permit and all asked for the website address. Was a wonderful walk and a great trail. Thanks for all your work.

This past weekend, my oldest child had a friend over for a visit and was "bored" after I told him to go outside and stop playing video games (which they'd been doing for the better part of the day). I suggested they go for a hike on the DRHT since it is located just behind our house. On hearing the suggestion, my other children also wanted to go for a hike, so we packed up some snacks, got on our shoes and spent the next 2 hours hiking on the trail. The fact that the trail was so conveniently located near our house (no need to drive to Fredericksburg) and could accomodate a stroller for our youngest child made the entire afternoon more enjoyable.

I've hiked a good portion of the trail the past few weeks. It's been terrific. The volunteers have been doing a stunning job of keeping the trail cleared and usable althought there are a few sections that still need adopting. The "finished" section east of Rt 610 is really great for biking! How amazing it will be when it's all finished - an easy commute to Dahlgren or anywhere along the way.
Thanks to all the Friends for making this resource available.

June 2007
I wanted to share a good running story on the DRHT.
I decided to run on the DRHT yesterday (6/4/07)
after work. I started my run on the DRHT just off
of Rt 610 this time (wearing bright orange shorts
and running top, I may add). I parked just
off of Rt 610 and started my run. I ran into another
woman walking the trail. I was so excited to see
another person using the trail! I introduced myself
briefly and asked her how often she used the trail.
She said she came out occasionally, which made me
excited! Someone was using the trail! Then
shortly after leaving her, I saw another person,
a runner on the trail, a man this time. Again, I
said hello and smiled, and he smiled back, although
we both continued to run.
Then the wildlife took over! Aside from the mayflies/black
flies, I was in heaven. I wish I had brought my
camera with me. I saw and heard toads/frogs jumping
into the marshes. I saw a mama turtle laying eggs
on the trail...just like Warren did just around
this time last year and he got a picture of it last
year - dejavu! Then only about 20 feet from
that turtle, I spotted another turtle on the trail,
which quickly spotted me and hid under some brush
on the side of the trail. Then, yes there
is more, I heard and saw a beaver swimming in the
marsh. I stopped and watched it for a second, so
amazed at all the wildlife I had already spotted
after only a short time. Then, yes there is still
more, further down the trail, I spotted a dear eating
some of the brush on the side of the trail. Once
the dear spotted me, it ran off too, but it was
such a beautiful white tail dear!
On my way back, I spotted a 3rd person using the
trail....how awesome is that...3 trail users during
one run! This man was walking. I started
talking to him. He lives off of Rt 610 and walks
from his house to the trail and back pretty often.
I told him more about our website and hope to see
him sometime for one of our events. He is also environmentally
friendly as he was picking up aluminum cans thrown
off the side of the road (people littering) to recycle
them.
Finally, I wanted to mention that the other car
that was parked off of Rt 610 got stuck. I found
out from my new friend that the girl and the guy
that I saw on the trail were together. They cut
the car too sharp and nearly landed in the ditch
right off the trail/Rt 610. She got stuck and the
man helped them get out. I told my fellow Friends
of the DRHT about this, and they had a post put
up to help prevent problems like this in the future.
They had it fixed in mere days. The Friends are
just such great, dedicated people!
Overall, this was a true success story. If anyone
asks if people are using the trail regularly, I
can honestly answer yes now!
